As a nurse, my shifts can be long, physically demanding, and mentally taxing. Over the years, I’ve learned that having the right products can make a huge difference in how I feel at the end of the day. These are my must-have nursing products that keep me comfortable, organized, and ready to take on any challenge.

1. Comfortable, Supportive Shoes

When you’re on your feet all day, having the right shoes can make all the difference. My go-to brand is Hoka Bondi‘s which offers shoes designed specifically for healthcare workers. I also recommend in getting insoles.

Why I love them:

    • Cushioned soles that provide all-day support.

    • Slip-resistant to keep me safe on wet hospital floors.

    • Breathable material to keep my feet cool.

2. Compression Socks

After a long shift, my legs and feet are often tired and swollen. My doctor recommended Compression socks from DuoMed. Compression socks help improve circulation and reduce swelling.

Features I appreciate:

    • Graduated compression for targeted support.

    • Comfortable, moisture-wicking fabric.

3. Nursing Clipboard

A sturdy clipboard with plenty of space for notes is essential for keeping track of patient information, schedules, and important reminders. I recommend the foldable clipboard if you are a new nurse.

Why it’s a lifesaver:

    • Folds to fit into your pocket. So all your information is right in your pocket if you have to go into a patient room without your WOW (workstation on wheels)
  •     When it folds up, it also hides private patient information from prying eyes.

    • Has built in medical cheat sheets. Things every nurse needs to know

 4. A High-Quality Stethoscope

A reliable stethoscope is a must-have for any nurse, and my favorite is the Littmann Cardiology series. A high-quality stethoscope is an investment but this is the number one tool we use everyday. If the Cardiology series is out of your price range all the Littmann stethoscopes work great.

What I love about it:

    • Clear sound quality for accurate assessments.

    • Ergonamic and high quality construction
    •
    • More than twice as loud as other leading brands
    •

5. Insulated Water Bottle

Staying hydrated during long shifts is crucial. I always carry an insulated water bottle like my Hydro Flask to keep my drink cold (or hot) throughout the day.

Why it’s essential:

    • Keeps my water cool for hours.

    • Leak-proof design.

    • Large sizes so I am never thirsty.
    •

6. Penlights & Scissors

Penlights and scissors are essential for nurses, providing quick and easy access to tools needed for assessments, wound care, and other critical tasks. Both tools are indispensable for delivering efficient and high-quality patient care. I also have a compact key chain penlight that clips to my badge for easy access.

Why I recommend it:

    • The penlights have pupil gauges for easy measurement.
    •
    • Durable scissors are perfect for cutting through bandages, clothing, and other materials in emergency situations.
  •     The keychain penlight allows for easy quick access in emergency situations.

7. Comfortable Nursing Scrubs

Finding scrubs that are both comfortable and functional is key to surviving a shift. I personally love Cherokee Infinity scrubs because they offer a perfect balance of style, comfort, and practicality. Another stylish brand loved by nurses is Figs.

What I look for in scrubs:

    • Stretchy, breathable fabric for ease of movement.

    • Multiple pockets for carrying essentials like pens, phone, and scissors

    • Soft, durable material that holds up after multiple washes. The Cherokee infinity are also difficult to stain which is a huge positive.

8. Shapermint highwaisted shapewear

Wearing shapewear under your scrubs helps provide a smooth, streamlined appearance, giving you added confidence during long shifts. It offers extra support to your core, helping to reduce discomfort and fatigue from standing or moving throughout the day. Additionally, shapewear can improve posture and provide gentle compression, which may help alleviate back pain or muscle strain from the physical demands of nursing.

Why wear shapewear:

    • Excellent tummy control.
    • Move and bend without worrying about possible wardrobe malfunctions.
    •
    • Feel comfortable and confident with a smooth and streamlined appearance.

9. Fitbit or Apple Watch

A Fitbit or Apple Watch is highly recommended for nurses as it helps track vital health metrics like heart rate, activity levels, and sleep, promoting personal wellness during demanding shifts. Additionally, features like notifications and alarms ensure nurses stay connected and organized without needing to constantly check their phones.

Why it works for me:

    • I can use the stopwatch or a digital clock while doing patient assesments.
    •
    • I can see my messages on my wrist vs being unprofessional and looking at my cellphone.
    •
    • I can set timers and alarms that will help keep me on track with my tasks.
    •

10. Fan for your W.O.W

Hospitals can sometimes get very warm, especially during long hours or intense situations. Having a fan allows you to stay cool reduces fatigue and distractions, allowing you to concentrate better on patient care and documentation.

  • Why it is essential:
    •
    • It attaches to the WOW handles, so it is not sitting on your work space
    •
    • Many patients keep their room very warm. Having a fan will keep you from being a sweaty mess as you do your tasks.
    •

    • Flexabile and durable
    •

11. Badge Accessory Set

This badge accessory set, featuring a multicolored pen, highlighter, and Sharpie, is designed to be your go-to toolset. Conveniently attached to your badge, it ensures quick and easy access whenever you need it.

Why it works for me:

    • The multi-colored pen allows for great report taking, especially if i have the same patients for a few days in a row.  Each day can be a different color on my report sheet.

    • Compact and Lightweight.
    •
    • Nurses often need to act fast. This set keeps writing tools within arm’s reach, helping you stay organized and efficient during busy shifts.
      •

Safety: Silicone bands eliminate the risk of injuries like ring avulsion, which can occur if a metal ring gets caught on equipment.

12. Large Lunch Bag

large lunch bag is essential for 12-hour shifts, allowing nurses to pack enough meals, snacks, and drinks to stay energized and nourished throughout their long day.

Why you need this:

    • Both functional and fashionable.

    • Promotes Healthy Eating: With enough room for home-prepared meals, you can avoid relying on vending machines or cafeteria food, supporting a healthier diet.
    •
    • Saves Money: Bringing food from home reduces the need to spend on takeout or cafeteria meals, helping you save money over time.
    •

13. Silicone Rings

Silicone bands are simple and understated, maintaining a professional look suitable for a healthcare setting.

Why it works for me:

  • Durability: Silicone bands are resistant to damage from water, chemicals, or physical wear, making them ideal for healthcare environments.
  •
  • Comfort: Lightweight and flexible, silicone bands are more comfortable to wear during long, active shifts.
  •
  • Safety: Silicone bands eliminate the risk of injuries like ring avulsion, which can occur if a metal ring gets caught on equipment.
